History

The Guinness Storehouse is a relatively new addition to the St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin. The Storehouse was opened in 2000 and is meant as a tourist site where people can learn all about the history of the most popular Irish dry stout. One of the oldest buildings on the site is used to house the Guinness Storehouse, it was built in 1902 and was used by St. James’s Gate Brewery as a fermentation plant. The process of modifying and converting the building, started in 1997 and the new attraction replaced the Guinness Hop Store. Completed in November 2000 the Guinness Storehouse has received over 4 million visitors, the most important of which can be considered Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

Features

The Guinness Storehouse is spread on seven floors and brings to life the history of Guinness. The entire Storehouse is build around a giant glass atrium that goes up through all the seven floors. Because of its shape the atrium is known as the world’s largest pint glass.

On the ground floor visitors are initiated into the process of bear making and the four key ingredients of beer are presented in an interactive manner. The ground floor where the bottom of the atrium is, displays with great pride the birth act of Guinness, a 9000 year lease signed by Arthur Guinness the founder of St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin.

Another very important part of the Guinness history is presented here. The coopers who once made the wooden barrels for Guinness have a special display with a wonderful glimpse into the past. The third and fourth floors are designed as training areas with conference facilities. Advertising has always been a key element of the company’s history, Guinness winning plenty of prizes for its commercial campaigns along the years. These prizes and iconic images of Guinness advertising campaigns are on display at the storehouse.

Of course no visit at Guinness is complete without having a pint of beer. At the end of the visit on the very top of the Guinness Store there is the Gravity Bar where any visitor can enjoy a Guinness while having a panoramic view of Dublin.
