Ibiza is a rock island in the Mediterranean Sea, 79 kilometers off the coast of the city of Valencia in eastern Spain. Ibiza has 132,637 inhabitants and a surface of 572 56 km² with over 210 km of coastline, making it the third-largest of the Balearic Islands, an autonomous community of Spain. Ibiza’s largest cities are Ibiza Town (Catalan: Vila d'Eivissa, or simply Vila), Santa Eulària des Riu and Sant Antoni de Portmany. Its highest point, called Talaiassa is 475 meters above sea level. Ibiza is the larger of a group of the western Balearic archipelago called the "Pityuses" or "Pine Islands" composed of itself and Formentera island.
Ibiza is home to the legendary "port" in Ibiza Town, a popular stop for many tourists and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other examples of protected sites are "God's Finger" in the Benirràs Bay, the remains of the first Phoenicians settlement at Sa Caleta and Puig des Molins (necropolis).
The official name of the island is in Catalan: "Eivissa". The name in Spanish is Ibiza, but the origin of the name is the Phoenician one: Ibosim. The story of this place begins in 600 years BC, although it is not chronologically mentioned before the year 654, when The Phoenician settlers created the capital of the island, Ibosim. The island was dedicated to the god of music and dance Bes, who could protect men against evil spirits and strangle snakes. After the Carthaginian time comes the Roman domination, then the island was owned by the Barbarians and the Byzantine until the year 711 when Arabic land on the Island and call it "Yebisah". The historic date for the island is August 8th 1235, the date of the Catalan conquest. The islands of Ibiza and Formentera join "the western world". For centuries Ibiza was a meeting point for the Saracen vessels which ravaged the Mediterranean Sea. The towers which surround the island and the aspect of the fortress of the rural churches were built during these times. Today, the island of Ibiza is divided into five provinces: the capital named Eivissa, Santa Eulària, Sant Antoni, Sant Josep, and Sant Joan. The island is administratively part of the Balearic Islands, whose capital is Palma, on the island of Majorca. Ibiza covers 5 of the community's 67 municipalities. Eivissenc is the native dialect of Catalan that is spoken in Ibiza and nearby Formentera. Also, Catalan shares co-official status with Spanish.
Ibiza has become very famous for the association with tourism, nightlife activities, and electronic music. The tumultuous nightlife is centered around two areas: Ibiza Town, the island's capital on the southern shore and Sant Antoni to the West. The summer club scene attracts very large numbers of tourists, though since 2007 the island's government and the Spanish Tourist Office have been working to promote more family-oriented tourism. The most well-known clubs include Space, Privilege, Amnesia, Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel, Pacha, DC10, Eden, and Es Paradis. Ever since 2009, Ibiza has seen an increase in tourist numbers every year, with nearly 6 million people traveling through Ibiza Airport in 2012. The summer season has become concentrated between June and September, focusing on the "clubbing calendar", when top producers and DJs come and play at various clubs.
Ibiza hasn´t always been a party island. The Phoenicians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Moors, and even the hippies had made their mark long before the droves of mainstream visitors arrived. Since the 1960s, when the first hippies arrived on the Island, Ibiza has maintained an alternative spirit from Spain and the rest of the Europeans. Nightlife in Ibiza is made of numerous restaurants, clubs, and bars all around the island. In 2007, the island’s government decreed that all new hotels in Ibiza must be five-star.
The Island has been inhabited since 2000 BC, holding up to this day Phoenician and Punic archaeological remains in different areas. With more than 50 beaches and over 200 kilometers of stunning coastline, the sunny island of Ibiza has fine golden sand and clear blue waters. Some of the best beaches on Ibiza can be found along the island's south-eastern coast, between Santa Eularia des Riu and Cala de Santa Vicent. The Old Town of Ibiza is the island’s main landmark and it comprises three main areas: Dalt Vila itself; Sa Penya (the old gypsy quarter with dozens of funky clothing boutiques) and La Marina. The walls of Dalt Vila or "High Town" and the cathedral and castle are also iconic views. When visiting Ibiza you can’t miss the 7th century BC tomb Necròpolis del Puig des Molins, the spectacularly lit cavern Cova de Can Marçà, the island of Es Vedra, the 14th-century Sant Miquel Church, the island of Formentera, Sant Antoni de Portmany, Coffee Ink or the wild canyon on the north side named Ibiza Horse Valley. In recent years, the luxury market has improved and there are new restaurants, clubs, and improvements to the marina in Ibiza Town.
Ibizans are very proud of their traditional heritage, both for its originality and the purity of their traditional clothing and music. Ibiza's local cuisine is typically Mediterranean. Of the most common culinary products of the island are sweets known as flaons. Other dishes include sofrit pagès, arròs de matança (rice with pork), bollit de peix (fish stew) and arròs a la marinera.
There are no animals, insects, reptiles or any other form of wildlife native to this Island that can harm you. The fauna here is more of the passive variety giving you freedom of mind when attempting one or more of the many gorgeous trails the Island has to offer. The summer climate of Ibiza usually ranges in the upper-20s °C, rarely reaching 30.0°C, with overnight lows below 21.8°C. Ibiza is blessed with emeralds beaches, and an always blue sky (more than 300 days of sunshine per year).
Ibiza is served by Ibiza Airport which has many international flights during the summer, especially from the European Union. There are also ferries from the harbor of Sant Antoni and Ibiza Town to Barcelona, Majorca, Dénia, and Valencia and bus routes. There are also ferries to Formentera leaving Sant Antoni Harbour (normally every Wednesday), and daily from Ibiza Town, Santa Eulària, and Figueretes–Platja d'en Bossa.
