New year's resolutions are all the same for most people. They usually want to try something new and test their limits in some way. When it comes to extreme sports it’s pretty much obvious that you’ll want to take new risks and feel new exciting things!
When you are an adventure junkie, you are most likely familiar with paragliding, scuba diving, hiking or extreme snowboarding. But are you ready to take your adrenaline level to the top-notch high?
We believe you are already curious enough, so we’d like to introduce you to these 5 unusual extreme sports you could try in 2023.
Note: some of these sports are far too extreme and dangerous, requiring years of practice, dedication, and nerves of steel. But all are incredible in their own right, so if you'd like to dedicate yourself to the art of mastering them, and are willing to train your body and mind to get to know them better, then prepare for a very exciting and challenging year!
Base Jumping
Base jumping is pretty similar to skydiving, but instead of jumping out of an aeroplane with a parachute, you jump from the top of a building or from a cliff. It's useful to note that this is known as the deadliest sport ever. The injury rate is 40% higher compared to parachuting and is definitely one of the most extreme sports in the world.
It’s quite exciting and extreme to jump thousands of feet above the ground, so be aware that you can get thrashed by the wind. You need to find an experienced instructor, who will have all the right equipment for you and will check the weather and your motivation before going base jumping. The only thing stopping you hitting the ground at full speed and evaporating your body is one solitary parachute, so you need to be prepared!
Here are some simple steps you need to take before considering base jumping:
- Become an experienced skydiver first;
- Find a Mentor - you’ll need to learn from a pro in order to Base jump safely;
- Train consistently to maintain a level of currency with skydiving and Base jumping in order to do it safely!
Free Solo Climbing
It takes a true daredevil to try out. It’s extreme and dangerous enough for all brave (and prepared) adrenaline junkies out there. You must be really passionate about climbing mountains first, and know your stuff, before going without a harness or any safety equipment. Every element involved is risky as there is a higher probability of injuries such as strained muscles, broken bones, etc. and one slip can result in death. All climbers have to be focused while performing this activity. We know it’s pretty cool to look like you’re in the movie “Mission impossible” but free rock climbing challenges you on so many unexpected levels.
For true thrill-seekers nothing matches the physical challenge of tackling cliffs and rocks in nature. No ropes, just your strength and the rock.
If you want to push your limits, here are some steps you need to take before doing it:
- Start indoors and practice climbing;
- Research the route you’re going to climb and go over it with equipment enough times to know it like the back of your hand;
- Know your limits and slow build up your abilities;
- Respect Mother Nature - weather can ruin everything.
Ice Climbing
If you’re willing to try free solo climbing, you might find ice climbing pretty appealing as well!
It’s an intense sport that requires agility, strength and endurance. No doubt it’s true extreme experience, one of the most dangerous forms of climbing that requires a lot of preparation and skill. All natural structures such as snow-capped mountains, icefalls and frozen waterfalls are breathtaking and risky at the same time. For many, the reward of conquering some of nature’s most vicious, icy structures is worth it. Unforeseen occurrences such as avalanche, falling ice or rock and many more are truly dangerous. But if that makes your heart go pumping, here are some tips before ice climbing:
- Learn the ropes of climbing, of course;
- Spend time with people who know what they’re doing and can teach you how to climb ice safely;
- Get the right equipment;
- Choose your backpack wisely - a pack that’s big enough to carry your rope, ice screws, extra layers, and crampon;
- Get outside in the winter more and get used to the several layers of clothes you can take off and put back on as your body temperature changes throughout the day;
- Check weather conditions before planning a climb;
- If you head out on your own, always let someone know your trip plans (this is only for the super experienced of climbers);
Slacklining
Are you proud of your steady balance and nerves of steel?
If not - this is not for you. If the answer is yes, well, slacklining is the extreme sport you should definitely try. Doing it from dizzying heights will push your limits to a whole new level.
Although Slacklines are used as a balance training aid in competitive sports, as fitness equipment or in physiotherapy, they are also your next extreme sport to explore once you take it to those dizzying heights.
Between mountains, buildings, bridges or whatever - It is a great challenge and the mental and mindset are far more important than the technical and physical ability.
Before rushing into it, here are some tips:
- Get your own SLACKLINE kit - You'll learn it faster by getting your own slackline kit and getting outside to practice;
- Practice balancing whilist standing still;
- Be patient - balancing on a stable slackline isn't easy, but you'll have it nailed in a few days!
Extreme Pogo
Known as Xpogo, Extreme pogo is mind-blowing just to watch, and it requires an incredible level of skill and technique to master. If you want to try it, remember that it includes any style of trick done with a pogo stick. Usually, it involves an extra-bouncy, extra-durable pogo stick. The special stick for high jumping durability is with rubber, more springs, creative air compression, and different handles.
